Help Elect These Democratic Nurses!

Jan Lanier, R.N.

Bill O'Neill, R.N.

Jan Lanier, R.N.

Bill O'Neill, R.N.

If you are asking yourself why you should help the election efforts of people you cannot vote for, please consider that members of both the Ohio House and the US House make law that apply to you as a nurse and as a citizen. So, we all have an interest in legislators other than the ones on our own ballots.

Jan Lanier R.N., of Westerville, is a candidate for the 2nd Ohio House District. This district encompasses Delaware County, which is just north of Columbus. Many nurses in Ohio are familiar with Jan from her long-term involvement in public policy. As an attorney she has been the Associate Executive Director for the Ohio Board of Nursing, a lobbyist for the Ohio Nurses Association (ONA) and she is currently the Deputy Executive Officer for ONA.

There are currently no nurses in the Ohio House. As Democratic State Senator Sue Morano R.N. has said, "I look forward to having another nurse in Ohio's General Assembly. It is crucial to have nurses at the table in the crucial discussions about nursing and health care issues."

You can find ways to help Jan on her web site, www.janlanier.com. You can also help by making a financial contribution to her campaign. Please send donation checks made out to: Citizens for Jan Lanier, 35 Berkshire Commons Drive, Westerville, Ohio 43082. Keep in mind that you are also eligible for a $50.00 credit on your Ohio income tax for contributing to a candidate for an Ohio office.

Bill O'Neill R.N., of Russell, is a candidate for the US House 14th District. This Northeast Ohio district covers Ashtabula, Geauga, and Lake counties and portions of Trumball, Portage, Summit, and Cuyahoga. Bill is a former judge on the 11th District Court of Appeals and practices as a registered nurse in the pediatric emergency room of a Cleveland-area hospital. Unlike many nurse attorneys, Bill was a lawyer for many years before he became nurse. His lifelong commitment to public service began in his 20's with service in the United States Army.

Bill would not be the only nurse in Congress when elected. However, as he says"We need more nurses to help explain to others in Congress why our health care system is broken and how it should be fixed,."

You can find ways to help Bill, including how to contribute on his web site, www.O'Neill08.com. Unlike his 2006 Ohio Supreme Court campaign when he did not take campaign donations, Bill needs to raise substantial funding for the Congressional race.

ONDC Activities in the Democratic Party

Members from around the state gathered in Columbus on April 26 for the spring meeting. Ohio State Senator Sue Morano, R.N., US House Candidate Bill O'Neill, R.N., and Ohio House Candidate Jan Lanier, R.N. discussed the importance of nurses being represented in legislative bodies. Each emphasized the importance of nurses providing assistance to nurse candidates for public office even if one cannot vote for a particular candidate. Although legislators are elected from particular districts, the laws they create have an impact on all citizens.

Other topics of discussion at the meeting included:

On May 10, ONDC members were visible at the Ohio Democratic Women's Caucus luncheon held in conjunction with the Ohio Democratic Party Convention. Among the speakers were Ohio House Minority Leader Joyce Beatty. Leader Beatty introduced current women members of the Ohio House as well as women candidates, including our own Jan Lanier.
